How this course works
The Magdala Apostolate Summer Program is designed to be an “at your own pace” study of the Luminous Mysteries. It is not like the regular Magdala Apostolate courses, with specific days and times to meet live online. Rather, it is an in depth reading program centered around these beautiful mysteries, to share and learn with other sisters, and to keep our minds sharp during the summer months, in preparation for next semester.
Each week a new reading will be posted on the Magdala Apostolate Summer Program home page. To access the readings for each week, click on the blue link indicated (ex. the blue link that says “Week One”). The page with the weekly readings will require a password which you will receive in an email after you have registered for the Summer Reading Program. Once you have entered the password, you will arrive at a page with links for the weekly readings, written summaries, study questions and reflections.
We have installed a little chat program you can access by the blue and yellow chat icon on the bottom right corner of the password protected pages. These chat box will serve as a “discussion forum”, so that the participants can discuss the readings, glean insights from their fellow sisters, share experiences and the fruits of meditation. We recommend that each student write a comment, answer a study question, etc. at least once each week. Your “post” or comment does not have to be lengthy, but should pertain to the topic or reading at hand.
Please ask questions and give comments pertaining to the readings through the chat box. If the question or comment is about a typo or format error, malfunctioning link or the like, please email [email protected] These types of questions and comments will be answered via email.
At the end of the summer we will have one live web conference class and discussion with Fr. Hezekias (Sabatino) Carnazzo via Zoom, Monday July 25th, 2016. This will serve as the final day of the program. This final day will be an opportunity for the participants to continue discussing the readings, the conversations initiated in the chat box and ask any remaining questions.
There will not be a weekly “class” as with our usual Magdala Apostolate courses, nor will you be expected to access the readings at a particular time. Attendance will not be taken for this program, however we do require the following:
1. Each student must post at least one comment or question on at least one reading during the course of the program.
2. All participants must attend the closing “class discussion” with Fr. Hezekiah (Sabatino) Carnazzo, July 25th 2016, hosted live, online, via the Zoom web conferencing program. (Details to follow)
If you have any questions about these requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us at 540-635-7155 or [email protected]
About the readings themselves
There are six weeks of readings: the introduction, which serves as a bit of groundwork, and then a reading for each of the five Mysteries of Light. The readings usually begin with scripture passages labeled as “Required Reading”. The entire reading will be centered around these passages and it is key that they are read as indicated.
It is also ESSENTIAL that you read the footnotes. There are large amounts of information in some of the footnotes that are very important for understanding and appreciating the main text.
Some Helpful Answers
Where did you get these readings?
Fr. Hezekias (Sabatino) Carnazzo composed this scholarly work as a single document, which was then divided into segments for this program.
Will there be a “class limit” for the Summer Program?
No. Since all but the class discussion with Fr. Hezekias will be personal reading and commenting online done at your convenience, there will be no class limit. All sisters who apply will be accepted.
Why do I have to register?
It is important that you register for this program so that we have an email address and name(s) of all the participants. This will help the coordinator maintain the privacy of the program (via passwords, etc.) and help with moderating class discussions. Some additional materials may be suggested via the weekly emails and the details for the final class discussion via Zoom will be sent only to those who are registered for the summer program.
What if I can’t make the final class with Fr. Hezekias?
It is required as much as attendance is required for our other Magdala Apostolate courses. If you are definitely unable to make the date of the class, and you know this in advance, please provide Fr. Hezekias with a one page (or more) paper on the key insights of this course. For submission deadlines or for any other questions about this caveat, please email [email protected]
